| FOP2008 Dean’s Message
Welcome to the Faculty of Science!
I would like to congratulate you for being selected to join our NUS Science family – your home for the next 3 or 4 years. As a young adult, university life is a new and enriching phase of your lives. You will have many choices to make, from what to study, to what co-curricula activities to be involved in. These years will be amongst the most memorable and formative periods of your life, and I am confident that you will enjoy yourself and make lifelong friends in the process.
All NUS Science graduates should graduate with a solid understanding of your major discipline. Equally important are attributes such as scientific thinking and problem solving skills, the ability to write clearly and persuasively, the ability to present a coherent and well thought-out argument, teamwork, tolerance, integrity, and attitudes that we expect of an educated person. Such learning extends far beyond the classroom. You should consider participating in the Student Exchange Programme (SEP) or other overseas exposure programmes, the Special Programme in Science (SPS), etc. Many of our professors are outstanding researchers and you should take the opportunity to experience research in their labs under the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme in Science (UROPS).
The Faculty also offers Freshman Seminars (SP1201) to newly matriculated students to introduce you to the larger world of academia, and to discuss topics of current interest in a relaxed small group setting with an academic mentor. If you want to improve your academic scientific writing skills, then Communicating with the Academy (SP1202) is for you. The Science Club also provides many such opportunities for personal development, and I urge you to find out more about their activities.
I wish you an enjoyable Freshmen Orientation!
